As a newborn photographer based in Altona Meadows, I’ve had the privilege of photographing so many families across Melbourne’s west during those early newborn days. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s this – most parents arrive feeling a little unsure about what they’re meant to do in front of the camera.
If that sounds like you, you’re not alone.
Almost every mum and dad I work with tells me the same thing before their session – “We’re not very good in photos” or “We don’t know how to pose with a newborn.”
The good news is, you don’t need to.
My role is to gently guide you through everything so it feels calm, natural, and relaxed. Nothing is expected of you. You don’t need to perform or prepare. You simply get to be with your baby.
Here’s a little look at what newborn sessions for families across Melbourne’s West actually involve.

What Family Photos actually Look Like During a Newborn Session
Natural connection (no posing required)
One of the most important parts of your session is simply capturing the connection you already have with your baby.
You don’t need to know what to do with your hands or how to sit. I will guide you into simple, natural positions that feel comfortable while keeping the focus on your baby and the bond you share.
Most of the time, these moments happen in between direction, when you’re just holding your baby close and settling into the experience.
It often looks like quiet cuddles, soft movement, and those little pauses where you’re simply taking it all in.
The way you look at your baby
There is something incredibly special about the way parents look at their newborn.
It’s instinctive. Protective. Overwhelmed in the best possible way.
These are often some of the most meaningful images from your session – not because you’re doing anything specific, but because you’re simply with your baby.
These are the photos that tend to become favourites over time, especially once those newborn days feel like a blur.
Close, connected family moments
I’ll often guide you into gentle holding positions where your baby is supported safely in your arms or resting against your chest.
These moments are slow and calm. There’s no pressure to get it right.
Sometimes I’ll adjust your hands or ask you to shift slightly, but mostly it’s about keeping things natural so the focus stays on connection, not perfection.
These are the images that often end up framed in your home – the ones that feel timeless because they reflect how tiny your baby once was in your arms.
Gentle kisses and affection
Some of the most loved images from newborn sessions are the simplest ones.
A kiss on the forehead. A nuzzle. A soft moment of affection without any direction at all.
These moments aren’t staged. They usually happen naturally while you’re holding your baby and settling into the rhythm of the session.
They feel small at the time, but they carry so much weight later on.
Including siblings and grandparents
If older siblings or grandparents are part of your session, I always make space for those relationships too.
With little ones, there’s never any expectation for perfect behaviour or sitting still. I work around their energy and personality, keeping things light and flexible.
Some of my favourite images come from these in-between moments – a sibling leaning in curiously, a proud grandparent holding their newest family member, or a quick cuddle that only lasts a few seconds.
These connections are just as important as individual newborn portraits.
The quiet in-between moments
Not every image is about interaction.
Some of the most powerful photographs come from the quiet moments – when you’re simply sitting nearby, watching your baby, or taking a breath while they’re settled.
These images help tell the full story of this stage of life. It’s not just about how your baby looked, but how it felt to be with them in those early days.
A relaxed, guided experience
Throughout your newborn session in my Melbourne studio, you don’t need to worry about what comes next.
I will guide everything gently so you can stay present with your baby.
There’s no rushing. No pressure. Just time to settle in and let the session unfold naturally.
Most parents are surprised by how easy it feels once we begin, especially when they arrive expecting to feel awkward or unsure.
Why these photos matter
These early days move quickly. So quickly that it’s often only in hindsight that you realise how much has changed.
That’s why I focus so much on capturing connection – not perfection.
Because one day, these photographs won’t just remind you of what your baby looked like. They’ll remind you of what it felt like to hold them, love them, and begin this new chapter together.
